Larne-Lough Neagh Licence

  • The petroleum exploration licence PL1/10 (Central Larne - Lough Neagh Basin) was awarded in March 2011
  • The licence covers an area of 663 square kilometres, with an initial licence term of five years
  • The Larne-Lough Neagh Basin has been largely overlooked by the oil and gas industry, only one exploration well has been drilled in the centre of the basin covered by the PL1/10 licence, back in 1971, before any seismic data had been acquired
  • The presence of extensive surface flood basalts at or near the surface had deterred explorers. However by applying newer techniques in seismic processing, InfraStrata has been able to image below the basalts
  • During 2011 & 2012, 400km of new 2D seismic data was acquired which revealed a basin very similar in structural style to the prolific East Irish Sea Basin with a large number of undrilled structures
  • The latest mapping has identified a number of prospects at Sherwood, Collyhurst and Carboniferous levels, resulting in a combined basin resource potential in excess of 600 million barrels
  • The Woodburn Forest-1 well on the Larne licence was drilled in May 2016 to a depth of 2,000 metres and encountered two conventional sandstone reservoir intervals, the Triassic Sherwood and the Lower Permian Collyhurst Sandstones. Wireline log analysis has calculated porosities of over 20% in the upper parts of both the Sherwood and the Collyhurst Sandstones but both targets were water wet. The well has been plugged and abandoned and the site reinstated.
  • A technical evaluation of the remaining potential of the licence is ongoing
