Steve co-founded Nautical Petroleum in 2003 which he successfully listed on AIM in 2005. The company's portfolio focussed on exploration and appraisal of assets in the UKCS & Europe, including pre-development projects of Mariner, Kraken and Catcher until it was acquired by Cairn Energy PLC in August 2012 for £414m.

As part of a 30 year career in oil and gas, Steve spent 7 and 11 years with Ultramar and Nimir Petroleum respectively engaged in successful exploration, acquisition and production. As business development and HSE manager at Nimir, he was responsible for acquisition strategy and technical dimensions of strategic planning. He led multidisciplinary teams to evaluate opportunities in the Americas, the Middle East, North Africa, and other OECD countries, which led to the acquisition and subsequent turnaround of a Venezuelan oil producing field. He also managed a drilling programme that resulted in the quadrupling of production in a field on Sakhalin Island in the Russian Federation and identified and secured a farmout with an oil company for a substantial carry on an oilfield in Kazakhstan.

He has an MSc in Petroleum Geology and DIC from Imperial College of Science and Technology, the University of London, a BSc Hons in Geology from the Queen's University, Belfast and is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London. Steve has been Chairman of the Oil and Gas Independents' Association since 2008 and holds a Government Appointment on both the PILOT schemes and with HM Treasury on their Fiscal Forum. From 2009 to 2012 he served on the Board of Oil & Gas UK. Steve is Chairman of Circle Oil plc and Savannah Petroleum Plc as well as holding various non-exec Chairman/Director posts.
